I need analysis for Michael Ondaatje's poem (inner tube). Please help!?

-Think about the three characters mentioned - the speaker, the dog and the heron. The speaker is rowing towards the shore where people are waiting expectantly. But the speaker wants to reach the shore to cool himself under some shade from this July summer day. The dog is learning to swim and the blue heron has an "awkward broken backed flap upside down."
And the speaker is "I'm going down to Peru" and his "soul between my teeth"
Peru is in South America and the speaker is perhaps on the pacific ocean rowing towards Tierra del fuego!
And then this line: "one of us is wrong"
Does it give you the answer about the events described! Who is wrong? see this line in light of the heron, the dog and the speaker.
