I will be graduating this coming spring with a bachelor's degree in accounting. I was convicted with a felony assault charge in 2002. I was wondering if I will be able to find an accounting job when I can't pass a background check. Would changing my name make a difference? I've heard its illegal to run background checks with a social security number.

Depends on the company, but it sure won't help. You might also be limited in the certifications you can get.

The time to ask this question was probably BEFORE you spent all that time in school getting a degree in accounting.

Changing your name won't make a difference, and would likely hurt you if potential employers found out you were trying to falsify a background check. And you're kidding, of course, about it being illegal to run background checks with social security numbers - how do you think anyone could run a check on a John Smith for example? Names have too many duplications. You don't have to give someone your social security number unless and until they hire you - but they don't have to hire you if they want to do a background check and you refuse to give it to them. I'd think for many accounting jobs, they'd run a background check.

Most places will tell you if they are going to be doing a background check, if it is accounting and being in charge of their finances more than likely a background check will be done. I dont think that you will be hired with a felony, and changing your name wont help because you will still have your record as well as your socil security number. What I would do is ask one of your professors about it. They would be the smartest people to ask. Good Luck

honestly i think you just wasted alot of time in college. i am a convicted felon of an assault charge from 2001. the only job i have been able to find and make good money is car sales. your only chance is expungement or getting it amended down to assault 4, which is a misdemeanor. due to most companys insurance restrictions you will not get hired regardless of the typeof felony offense. its sad but its true. talk to an atty. my friend, but i have been in the same boat your in. still am, i wanted a job in the medical field, but i can make 100thousand a year at the auto dealership im at. good luck with your problem, 1st step is contacting an atty, and be prepared to spend alot of cash for an expungement

Well most reputable places will not hire somebody to handle MONEY with a FELONY. Those two words never go together.

with a felony, you won't be able to get a security clearance so you are banned from the govt and govt contractors. Try a momma and poppa shop down the street.
