hmm.
what if george bush would just say, lets just pray for the war to be over... hmm. how about you get ur *** up and actually do something about it, right?
i am not trying to offend anyone or be mean. I respect other peoples religions, I am just going to wait and see what he is going to do afterwards.
all you christians dont get worked up on this, it is ok for people to share their opinion, and why waste your time on leaving any answers. just move on with it. pray as much as you like.

What if the problem were rampant unemployment and the Governor asked people to pray for a job? The response would most likely be a swift kick right out of office. Prayer is making wishes to imaginary creatures, it's something children do, not adults. The governor is asking people to behave like children in order to solve a real problem. Prayer has been scientifically examined in numerous experiments, and not once has it been shown to have a positive effect. In fact, prayer had negative effects on some terminally ill patients, because they thought the prayer was replacing actual medical treatment. It's time to grow up and depend on yourself and your fellow man to solve problems, wishing to some mythical being in the sky doesn't make it rain, it just makes you look foolish.

What would you suggest man do to make it rain- seed clouds, do an old Apache rain dance?
Man can't make it rain- do Atheists believe they can?

I don't know why Atheists would be mad about the suggestion to pray for rain.
What ,they would rather die of thirst than admit that there is a power greater than themselves that might bring rain?
They are foolish lot indeed to believe that they are all there is and that there is nothing in the world or beyond more powerful than a human being. LOL ( man that came from apes is the most powerful entity in the Universe- if I'm wrong and atheist are right there's not a lot of point in praying for rain or doing much else while your alive- it's all for naught)
Man hasn't made it rain yet- perhaps God can.
It never hurts to try something new- sometimes you'll learn something new from it.

Well, it was "all serious" way before your grandpa heard about it. "praying for rain" is not the only thing the Governor is asking people to do. But just because you don't believe in god (and I'm no Bible thumper either) doesn't mean you have to be all offended because of the request. He didn't demand that everyone get down on their knees and pray to Jesus Christ....it was a simple statement, and in the Bible belt, I guarantee many people ARE taking his advice.

If it isn't raining, there's not a whole lot people can do about it besides conserve water. The governor and the people can pray all they want, but if the weather conditions aren't right, it's not going to rain. I'm an agnostic, and I say, let 'em pray; it'll hopefully keep them out of worse trouble.

I, personally, have no problem with him asking people to pray for rain. I am in no way offended by people praying, or not praying. My opinion of religion and religious expression is - "to each their own."

But I hope he also takes some other actions to deal with the water crisis as well.

It is a serious situation. The fact that the governor is praying for rain doesn't mean that he's not taking other, more secular, steps to address the issue.

I'm an atheist. Why do you think I would be pissed about it?

Some very serious people are praying and they are not all stupid people. Even scientists have noticed positive effects of prayer...Why get so up tight about the prayer effort...It does not stop other efforts. I wonder why folks aren't digging artisian wells...or are they? Maybe I'll as that question.

Pray for (fill in the blank) is a common American saying . . . like see ya later. First of all, there's nothing wrong with praying . . . if your an Atheists, please feel free to meditate. The remark is completely lacking intent. He didn't say pray to Jesus or you'll die of dehydration . . . I'm sure he would love your suggestions as to how to handle the problem.

I live in GA and the governor is working hard to ensure water supplies. Why do atheists get so offended when someone speaks about their own beliefs?.
