Beards? You mean facial hair. A beard is a man choosing the let his facial hair grow.

Both sexes have facial hair. It is less visible in Causcasians than Negroids. It is a sexual characteristic. Simply something the male human has evoled with. Perhaps because at one time the male hominid used to spend more time hunting and gathering food. Therefore body hair was a little help against the chill of cold days.

Another thing, not all men have facial hair or it is more like the facial hair of women. It is best not to make generalizations when talking about things biological.

Facial hair keeps your face warm, which is why people living in colder regions (caucasians) have evolved more facial hair than people living in warmer climates (negroids).

A "beard", when specifically referring to facial hair growing from the bottom of your chin, protects your neck from getting cold, since many important arteries and veins in your neck are relatively close to the surface of your body, and are therefore more prone to heat loss.

Another probable use of beards is for protection. The neck is a very vulnerable part of the body, many predators go for the throat of their prey; people in a fight would also strangle or slit their opponent's throat. Having a beard might at least afford some level of protection. This might explain why only men have beards....they fight more.

During the course of evolution, humans have lost most of their hair. Men are the ones who have to go out to find food, and so it makes sense to have hair on the face to protect it in the winter. In the summer, hair keeps flies away.

Maybe for the same reason male lions have such huge manes? Maybe the bushier the beard, the more intimidating to competitors for female attention?
