Never mix these fish.... ever. Goldfish are coldwater fish and bettas are tropical. A goldfish needs to be in a filtered tank with 10 - 20 gallons of water per goldfish (depending upon the variety and size). Larger tanks are highly recommended. Goldfish need water temps between 60 and 72 degrees in order to thrive. Bettas can be kept in smaller tanks. Generally 1.5 - 2.5 gallon tanks are sufficient for single bettas. The betta fish likes plants and other hiding spaces, too. All betta fish need a heater to keep temps around 72 - 78 degrees.
Both fish have different dietary requirements for each to thrive. Male bettas should not be kept together unless you know what you're doing and have a large enough tank to establish territories for each male. Only very experienced betta keepers should do this. Female bettas can kept in groups of three or more and are also compatible with some other varieties of TROPICAL fish. If you attempt to keep multiple female bettas with other fish, do your research and ensure you have a tank large enough for such a community tank.
But, never, ever keep cold water fish (goldfish) with tropicals such as betta.

No you shouldn't keep them together. I doubt the betta will attack the goldfish but bettas are tropical fish and goldfish are coldwater fish they have different requirements so they need separate tanks. If you want to keep a betta with other tropicals thats fine as long as the other tropicals are peaceful (not nippy) and don't have long colorful tails)

not really, depending on your tank size and type of goldfish and temp of water it might work, it's not because of tacking that it probably won't work it's that bettas are tropical and goldfish are cold water. can you tell us those?
btw people PLEASE do your research instead of blindly answering and spreading ignorance, bettas do not kill every fish they see. just like many other fish they are territorial and fight with other bettas to keep their territory, I don't know why they get such a bad reputation.

actually, I was referring to it working better with fancy goldfish, like ranchus and lionheads which are better in temps around 75*F which is still fairly good for a betta who prefers temps closer to 80*F. the tank should be at least 15g.
