That's like asking a cancer to remain in the colon and spare the rest of the body. But that's not in the nature of cancer. Socialism wants to spread.
And by the way, I have lived and worked in a socialist country. Socialism saps the ingenuity, the drive, the initiative out of a society. Doesn't make them 'bad people', it simply reduces the need and the incentive to excel. Why 'excel' is there is no motive? While socialism seems attractive to societies given the responsibility it removes from the shoulders of the individual to provide for themselves, this is not how a species evolves. The human race became strong through adversity and the resulting self reliance. Removing this adversity weakens a society. It becomes virtually, but not literally, 'fat and lazy'. I've seen it happen and experienced this first hand.

I feel a lot of people missed class that day. If Mamanuke would check there is a Democratic, and there is a communistic socialism.
Under Democratic socialism all the basic industries, ( medicine, steel, construction, communications, transportation, etc.) are owned by the government. Socialized for the good of all society or nation. These industries should not just benefit the few. The people vote on the government overtaking an industry, the difference is the owner does get compensated.
Under dictoral or communistic socialism private industries are taken over forcibly and no compensation is given to the owner.
Canada is an example of democratic socialism, where people do own property. However, I don't believe I would like their medical system for many reasons. I also would not want the government controlling industry with the government fixing prices. Competition in life is a good thing.
I prefer we remain Capitalist with a few social nets, for the disabled, the elderly, and disadvantaged children only! Private enterprise does work in a free state. Liberals are leaning to far left with ideas like Hillary's and that is socialism, Spanky, who hides behind a conservative avatar!

Apparently, you've been tazed once too often. Have you spoken to anyone from Europe lately? They don't consider themselves socialists. They continue to own private property and run their own businesses. They get a lot of help from the government that they pay taxes for. I realize you're only parrotting what you've heard on talk radio or conservative news media rants, but you really should try doing some research before you accept what they say as gospel. Did you miss your school day on that?
Edit: Well, Moody, I don't think the questioner was interested in a definition of socialism. He just wanted to post yet another extremist criticism of a group of people he disagreed with!

America should be willing to look at Europe or any country for that matter and see what works best for the common good then adopt and even improve on it for our own country. But instead we have people who don't like change usually close minded stupid people. Who live in a bubble and think we are still the top supper power. Never mind the higher infant mortality rate , never mind are freedoms slipping away never mind we are behind in math and science and never mind the Europeans live longer and healthier than we do.
My point has been made , Just the fact that you would give thumbs down to someone who wants to improve the current situation shows how narrow minded you all are.

Please re-read your history book. Europe was a capitalist economy when the settlers traveled. It didn't start to turn socialist until after the WW2.
After going through WW2 Europe saw how wrong Capitalism is and sort a fair system for all. The rich still get richer but there is a safety net for those that get ill or unemployed. America has the most people below the poverty line out of any developed country.

Funny.
You obviously know little about the history of Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries yourself. Most of the European nations at that time were far from the "socialist utopias" you like to disparage. Most were feudalist societies where the aristocratic upper class benefitted from the fruits of peasant labor, which have more in common with early 20th century Fascism. (Something that many conservatives here would love to revisit.)
Initially, most left to the "New" World either for religious reasons (convert native indigenous populations) or to create new wealth for the Mother Country. It would not be until much later that these colonists would sever ties to Europe once they developed a sense of national pride and for lack of representation within their respective home countries.
By the way, Western Europe seems to do quite fine with their MIXED socialist/capitalist economies.
It seems YOU were the one playing hookie during history class.

You are so not going to like my answer.
94% of US citizens have never been outside the USA and have not a clue about Europe. Countries like Germany have the same GPD per capita as the USA, Switzerland, Luxembourg and some other ones have up to double the GDP per capita. The people are taller, healthier and smarter (average IQ 110%) then in the USA (IQ 92%).
Europe, like Japan, has very little natural resources, which they make up in efficency.

I think we're better off staying in the US and trying to change our government back to a democracy from the fascism we've experienced under the Bush/Cheney regime.

Well sorry to inform you but we don't want a Socialist Nation, we want what wise men throughout history have wanted, a Democracy with built in safe guards for the population, NO capitalistic Democracy has EVER been successful without social safety nets, let me repeat that so it sinks in, NO capitalistic Democracy has EVER been successful without social safety nets, so sorry to burst your bubble spanky but someone has to educate you about the historical reality's you seem to have failed to learn

They could save millions of man hours, and millions of dollars, just by getting on a plane and living in their land of oz.
And we know thay have a fleet of carbon friendly jets,
so all of them should be able to get a seat.
