Nicholas James is a great name. It is better than Liam Andrew. And I know some Nicholases that get called Nicholas, not Nick or Nicky, because their parents and family called them Nicholas from the beginning. I also know Joshuas that are never Josh, Daniels that are never Dan. It's all in what the family calls them from birth. So call him Nicholas and ask everyone else to call him that too. He may wind up Nick later in life (due to friends or his own preference) but I wouldn't worry about it too much.
Good luck! And that is a beautiful name!

Like a fair few others have said, if you would like him to be called Nicholas, and you make sure that everybody knows that, then I should think that Nicholas is what they'll call him. He may decide that he prefers Nick or Cole as he gets older, but as long as you make your preference well known to begin with, people will most probably call him Nicholas for a good few years.
When my boys were born I was convinced that I'd leave any nicknames to my family and friends, and that I would call them by their full names, without fail, but it's turned out completely the opposite. Within a couple of weeks Orian became Rory and Lucas became Luke, although to everybody else they were, and still are, Orian and Lucas. I guess things don't always turn out exactly how you've planned, but as his parent, you'll most probably have the deciding hand over what they get called.

My step-sons name is Andrew. That is what everyone calls him. you as the parent get to decide what he will be called. If you don't want him to be called nick or cole or any other nick names tell people. I prefer Liam over nicholas.

I like either one of your choices. I think if you always call your son Nicholas, that will be what he goes by. I know plenty of kids who have names that can have nicknames, but they are always called by their full first name. Like Anthony, or Steven. If you prefer Nick, go with calling him that when he is born instead of Nicholas, and leave Nicholas as his formal first name. For a nickname, I prefer Nick, but I like Cole as a regular name, just not as a nickname for Nicholas.

If I named my child Nicholas James I would always call him Nicholas, but his friends could call him Nick.
My twins are William & Tobias and everyone calls them Will & Toby. Except me. I use their full names, but every now and them will use Will and Toby.
I prefer Nicholas James to Liam Andrew. I like longer first names that can be shortened if you want to.

He will be called Nicholas and not a shortened version if that's what you want. I don't like nicknames ever - Nicholas is the only thing I find acceptable.
I have a cousin named Richard and he has never been called anything but Richard... not by family, his friends, his fiancee or any of his teachers in school or his bosses (he's now 26...) It can be done.

Nicholas is cute! So is James.
I'd call him both Nick and Cole. hehe..
but it might lean more towards Nick.
I love Andrew. Liam, not that much.
Nicholas Andrew is adorable too! =)
Congrats!

Ah ... nicknames! When your kiddo is small, you might call him Nicholas. He might learn to say his name is Nicholas. But my best guess is that somewhere around first grade, if not sooner, he'll be Nick.
Personally, I like the name quite a bit, regardless of the nickname drama. But if you're reluctant to hear your son's name shortened, stick with Liam Andrew. It's equally appealing, and it's unlikely they'll call him anything but Liam.
