...you keep taking the pill, not knowing that you are actually pregnant?

When I was 38 years old, our children were 18, 15, and 12. I had been taking birth control pills faithfully for 11 years. I began to develop some pain in my stomach whenever I ate and then started getting heart burn. When I went in to my doctor for my regularly scheduled yearly physical, we were all totally shocked (including my doctor) to find out I was pregnant. I had been taking the Pill all the time, had normal periods, except for the one right before my appointment which was lighter and shorter than normal. A pelvic exam, followed by peeing in a cup for a pregnancy test revealed that my stomach issue was not due to Irritable Bowel Syndrome as my doctor first thought, but due to pregnancy. I had to have an ultrasound to determine how far along I was and it was nearly unbelievable (even now) to find out I was already 17 weeks along and had no clue I was pregnant. Of course, I was very concerned that I had been taking the Pill all this time, but my doctor said not to worry about that. She said since I obviously didn't need to take them anymore that I should stop, but that there is no evidence that birth control pills pose risk to the baby. But, as with all medicines during pregnancy, unless it is absolutely necessary, you should not take anything. She was more concerned that I had been taking high blood pressure medication and medication for migraine headaches. Our little surprise baby was born with only a few minor pregnancy, labor, and delivery problems brought on by my developing Gestational Diabetes, but she was perfectly healthy. She is now 10 years old and remains the picture of health. So, while taking birth control pills while unknowingly pregnant does not cause problems for the baby, it is an unneeded medication and should be stopped as soon as you know you are or think you are pregnant.

It happened to me, but in all fairness I wasn't taking the pill everyday so that's how I got pregnant. I took the pill for the first two months of my pregnancy and my doctor assured me that nothing could happen because of it. I had a healthy baby girl!!

Best of luck!!!

Many times your body will accept the pregnancy regardless, and you will notice enough changes to see a doctor in time to prevent any defects. Other times though your body may "ignore" the pregnancy because of the pill hormone, you will continue to have a period which takes nourishment from the baby and can cause self abortion or birth defects. If you believe you may be pregnant, you should see your doctor right away!!!

I have had 5 children. 4x out of the 5 I got pregnant on birth control, on pill, on depo and on the patch. I was still wearing the patch when doc told me I was preggo. None of my my children suffered any ill effects.

nothing much will happen but go see your doctor for reassurance anyway. He or she should be doing a pre-natal check over anyhow.
