The fresher the eggplant the more tender the peel will be.
When I cook mine straight from the garden I leave the peel on. In the off-season, when I have to get them from the grocery store, the peel is sometimes tough to chew.

The eggplant skin is rather hard therefore it's better to peel the skin.
But if it tastes good for you then there is no need to peel it.

The older varieties of egg-plant had a bitter and quite touch skin, they needed to be peeled, but modern varieties do not, it is a matter of personal preference. Old varieties also needed to be sliced, salted and then rinsed after half an hour or so to cure the bitterness of the flesh....makes you wander why anyone used to eat them.

No, you do not have to peel it. I've never come across a recipe that required me to peel an aubergine.

No, you do not have to peel. Anyone who doesn't prefer the peel may easily remove it when served.
