Confessionals are the areas where the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) is normally administered for sinners.
Ours are located in the main body of the church near the pews. We have sliding doors for privacy, and a dim light on our side of the screen.
The key is that the confession is completely, totally, absolutely private. Priest are forbidden to EVER reveal what is prayed, confessed, or discussed during this Sacrament. The priest will go to jail or sacrifice their lives to keep this sacrament secret.
So say what you need to...the priest have prayed, healed, and administered Christ's forgiveness, compassion, and mercy on many many people over their priestly ministry in Christ. The ordained ministry of priest IS to heal forgiven sins and tend the flock in Jesus name. So we go to our Divinely appointed priest. Acts 20:28

These are secluded places where you confess your sins to a priest.
With all due respect, you do not need to go to a confessional box for God to forgive you as the Roman Catholic Church teaches, it's not biblical at all.
The bible says "if we confess our sins to God, He is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness". It did not say when you confess your sins to the priest, the priest is not God as he does not have the power to forgive only God does.

Located in the nave (where the pews are) of the Church, they are small closet-sized "rooms" where one can anonymously receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

You go there and confess you sins. You have to pray and be fully sorry for your sins a intent to not do it again. Then you get absolved. You can also ask for advice.
