Euripides is the oldest known source of this quote ("Those whom the gods wish to destroy they first make mad.") and it has been used in one form or another by many, up to Longfellow.

It's as true as the best of proverbs.

It would be better said, Whom the devil destroys, he first makes mad.

God destroys no one. Man destroys himself. Any action man makes, if out of the will of God, will result in his own destruction. God would never make anyone mad. God loves everyone, even those who hate Him. Especially those who hate Him. God is Love.

it really all depends on the god that you know.

the god of this Material Realm really hates incarnate cherubs who are actually vessels of a New Consciousness. this incarnate cherub represents the One, True GOD who imparts Wisdom to enable his True & Faithful children to regain their Immortality & their Eternal Freedom.

Naturally, the god of this Material Realm would do his best to stifle the incarnate cherub because he wants his slaves to be kept as ignorant as possible (to be kept in Darkness so to speak), and thus subservient to all his whims and caprices. the incarnate cherub, and the attendant New Consciousness, is a dangerous threat to his worldly rule and must be destroyed at all cost.
