Although i agree with the above answers and the company is in the wrong i always remember a tv interview with a top businessman and he said you should always do you very, very best to leave an employer on good terms no matter what they have done to you.

They say there is no recommendation better than word of mouth and effectively that's what a reference is, i have know many companies who have spoken 'off the record' to new employers regarding how people work, sickness, etc.

It's just one more day, it's just 4 hours of your life where you get to leave a good last impression, one that they will remember rather than that cow that didn't turn up, the one who let them down, who messed up the whole day, got everyone stressed out, see what i mean?

You go in, do your 4 hours and you LIE, you bite your tongue, you say goodbye to everyone, you say thank you to the boss, say you've enjoyed your time and your sad to leave.

You will gain nothing from not turning up, you will only lose out everytime someone asks for a reference.
You will GAIN big time by taking my advice.

After all, what's 4 hours to sacrifice when it could help you get better jobs for the next 10 years?

Go to work and treat your colleagues to a slice of your birthday cake. You never know they may have refused you the day off because they are planning to throw you a surprise party! They did that where I worked and it was great fun (although a long time ago now!!!) On a serious note it isn't worth risking your job by ringing in sick - just confine your celebrations to the weekend and be thankful you have a job.

Do the last shift and leave with dignity. A highly successful person once told me you should always to a job to the best of our ability, no matter how awful or menial the job, because it gets you in the habit of always doing your best. Get in the habit of doing the right thing and not taking cheap shots like calling in sick on your last day.

If you want to be professional, go in for the shift. If having the time off is more important to you, then don't go in.

Do not lower yourself to meet somebody else's standards, go in, do your last shift, walk away with your head held high.

Do the right thing, will one day out of your whole life....

Be better than they are treating you, hold your head up high and finish what you started.

as long as you wont rely on them to write you a refrence then sod it. if you will be asking them for a refrence when you get a new job then it may be best to just go in.

Well, I'd say call in sick just so you can stick it to them, but if one day you need a reference, they may remember that you were rude to them, or whatever. Don't burn your bridges. But if you are *ahem* legitimately sick *cough* they can't do anything about it.

only you can decide that.... what would make you feel best....going to work your last shift or staying at home pretending to be ill...
