After months of training and studying, I finally got to take the checkride for my Private Pilots License. Unfortunately, I did not pass the oral. The examiner I had was really very mean and very rude. He was laughing and gigling at every question I had answered wrong. He then told me I did not exert alot of effort into preparing for the checkride and that I did not study hard enough in ground school. WHY ARE FAA PILOT EXAMINERS SO MEAN ???

my husband is a pilot and he says that they feel some wierd right to be rude to aspiring pilots becuase they have been there already, kind of like hazing. They aren't as mean to you when you've got some experience.

If what you say is true, file a complaint with your local FSDO. You may not be the only person that has been treated this way by your examiner. Regardless of how ill prepared you were for your exam, your examiner should be a professional at all times and should not patronize you or act in a manner that is demeaning you. You may just feel he was rude because you weren't prepared for your exam. Think of this as a learning experience. Remember too that this is just the beginning. Check rides and flight exams are just starting for you if aviation is what you want to do in life. As a pilot at the very least you will be taking a flight review every other year. And every time you add on another rating there will be another check ride. Get use to it.

I had a choice in the '70's between a free check ride with an FAA pilot who was said to be a hard check pilot or a $25 dollar check ride with a civilian appointed by the FAA to give check rides. I took the free check ride with the FAA, partly to save $25, and mostly to protect my soft, pink flesh from an easy check ride.

I don't know why the check pilot seemed mean to you. Bust your butt on the preparation and save it on the turn to short final. Quit complaining and learn what you need to learn so you get all the answer right and nobody will have an excuse to be mean.

I am going to have to agree with the previous answers.

You must be prepared for this exam. This isn't like getting a driver's license.

A bunch of the guys I went through school with did nothing but memorize the answers to the written exam and considered this a "learning experience." When it came time for the oral, they also failed. They failed because they new answer A, B, C, or D. when given those possibilities. When asked to EXPLAIN an answer, they could not because they had not learned it.

If you are going to be the PILOT IN COMMAND of an aircraft, you need to understand how it works and what the rules are that govern your flight.

Perhaps he was as frustrated with you for wasting his time.

becuase they must be satisfied that you are responsible to take another's life in your craft

if you did not prepare for your check ride - -
what will you do on a real flight

it's not like you are jumping in a dukes of hazard car to run down to see Cooter at the shop

Had a seasoned chief TEST pilot - my friend - was checking out the junior test pilot - before he the chief - went on vacation for three weeks

they must have been laughing too- - - -
because BOTH missed the simplest of check list items

CONTROLS FREE AND CORRECT

that's why we type out check lists - beacuse they are SO
important that we do NOT do them from memory

the plane was COMPLETELY cross wired

up = down
left = right
right = left

they put the twin engined bird in the ground from 200 feet on takeoff

neither made it out

am I mad? - you are just pitching a temper tantrum compared to my RAGE!

those four little words cost me my friend

what will your effort be next time?

Gee... Now you are going to run home to Mommy and she'll make it all better!

GROW UP!

Your examiner did you a favor by failing you on your first check-ride. Now maybe you'll really pay some attention and be prepared for the next one.

they are not mean. they are very strict. you need to know the facts and u need to KNOW them. they cant let someone that they arent 100% positive is ready have a private pilots license. It could be dangerous

What everyone else said sounds understandable. Good luck and try harder next time for your exam. I'll be starting to learn too and thanks for bringing up your experience for the others out there who need to know what's in store in the future.
