How do prisons and jails handle the special dietary needs of prisoners with diabetes, ulcers, high cholesterol etc? What about prisoners who need medication regularly?

Prisons and jails must meet dietary requirements for medical purposes and legitimate religious ones (Kosher, etc.). Prisoners who need regular medication usually have a med call at the infirmary or, if in a higher security institution, meds are delivered at the required times.

Inmates that have special dietary obligations put in a request to the dietician citing certain medical or religious obligations. If it is religious the chaplain o.k.'s the request and the inmate is given Kosher, or Halal meals. Most of the Jails and prisons here have stopped using pork in any of their meals to help avoid dietary conflicts. If the person has a medical need the dietician will verify this through the medical unit and issue, low salt, low sugar, and or liquid diets, high protein diet, etc. to ensure the inmates dietary needs are met.

Prison is not supposed to be a "nice" place. However, dietary requirements are met if there is a medical necessity. Medications are distributed as needed, as well as any special foods.

Dont worry as most prisoners are dealt with correctly if they have anything wrong with them. There are doctors to look after them and most prisons have a special ward for the sick, as for medication, if you need it and you can prove you take medication in the first place, you will get it. I have epilepsy and high cholestrol and the short time i spent at Brixton i was looked after OK.
