Yes that's true, in Islam we call that small death, our soul leaves the body when we fall asleep and is kept between God's hands, if He sends it back we wake up if He doesn't we die. That also explains why we dream sometimes about bad or good things that will happen to us, that's a message God gave us either to warn us from something or to give us good news.
"Sleep is a kind of death. The soul leaves the body and goes to where Allah wills, and discovers unseen matters in the world of souls, which could not be discovered during consciousness.
Allah Says (interpretation of meaning): {It is Allâh Who takes away the souls at the time of their death, and those that die not during their sleep. He keeps those (souls) for which He has ordained death and sends the rest for a term appointed. Verily, in this are signs for a people who think deeply.}[39:42].
A person who is asleep could see in his sleep strange things. If he sees what pleases him, he should not disclose it and he should not inform anybody else except whom he loves. And if he sees a nightmare, then he should blow to his left side and seek refuge in Allah from the evil of Satan. In this way it will not harm him and he should not inform anybody else about it. This ruling has been reported in sound Ahadith of the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam)."

I don't think so. I am a spasmodic sleeper and go in and out of sleep a lot, I don't think my soul would have time to take a holiday, quite frankly.
Besides I don't believe in the soul. I don't think we humans have anything that sets us apart from the animal realm, and dreams don't have a special meaning - my dog dreams.
We dream of things that represent what is going on in our mind at the time. It isn't your soul going to Australia and reporting back to you. It's every day experiences or the things we really long for that we dream about, or the things we fear.

If you look at what the bible says, you will see that all persons, including animals are called souls.
Dreams come from the complex make up of our mind because, like a computer we store information and events. Our minds use dreams to relieve stress and is part of figuring things out when we are relaxed.
Yor are not having an outerbody experience but it is a physical process to help us grow. I am sure there is still much to learn about dreams and their practical purpose.

That happens to me all the time, in fact I was trying to tell my wife last night when I got back, to please wake me up Man, this is the real thing. It started right after I left my combat tour in Vietnam. Last week I told my Pastor that I had an out of body experience about him and told him how I saw him and he told me, it was true that did happened.. We both just looked at each other and I said I was praying for him. I am sure that outer body experiences happen, I have been all over the world. The ones I fear is when I find myself in a bad place where they don't want to turn me lose!

Your soul is the whole of you, and when the spirit that belongs to God and is the life of the soul, returns to God at death sleep, then next is the resurrection to have life.

In Judaism, we do believe that a part of the soul called the Neshamah goes to heaven and gets specialized high intensity training.
This doesn't happen to everyone, but only to those who have reached a certain spiritual level.

I believe that is true. I also think that the world we are in while we are dreaming, is where are souls go when we die.

Sometimes we dream. Sometimes nothing happens.
But surely we close our eyes when we sleep. How then could we observe where Mr. Soul goes?

Buddha says that there is no soul.
And you exist because there are reasons
for you to exist. The reason that you want to
hold on to yourself & have desires.
Also Buddha says that body, mind, feelings, awareness, consciousness , they all belong to the devil, god of death & disease who is punishing you by creating these for you because you want to hold on to these as your own.
Dreams tell you that how easily you can create anything you want and believe these as real but actually these are only manifestations of your own hidden desires lying dormant.
