It does not happen in all families. It happens in such families only where the sons are given preferential treatment over daughters by the parents.It also happens if the age difference between the two is not much.In fact, I have seen many elder brothers having a patronizing attitude over their younger sisters and encouraging them in every way.However, my experiences are limited to the families in India.

Well, I'n no big brother but I am a big sister and I use to hit my little brother.
I did it because I felt annoyed by them sometimes and if I throw my anger at them. They cant do anything about it since they're little and you feel like the boss.
I feel guilty now, remembering how I use to hit my brother and kick him and stuff...
Glad we both get along now. Well... we dont get along but we've become closer and I dont hurt him anymore.
