It's a psychological process called deindividualisation. Deindividualisation is where a person, either the individual or an outsider is no longer seen as an individual but a part of a collectivity. It's one of the explanations for why people can be so racist, or cruel to people who belong to another group. For Nazi Germans, a Jew was no longer an individual human being, but a part of the Jewish collectivity, indistinct from everyone else, and the German was a part of the German army, not acting as an individual.

Deindividualisation can have a positive effect. It can allow people such as doctors and nurses to work with professionalism and detatchment whilst confronting stressful and emotional situations.

However, it also means that people can be incredibly cruel, since they feel no emotional attachment to that person. Deindividualisation is particularly apparent in a virtual setting, because you never meet or see the individuals involved, only the products of their involvement. For example, you will only ever read my answer, but probably never meet me, and it's difficult to read a block of text and remember that there's a person behind it. So there you go - people are so cruel in Y/A because they do not see their actions having emotional consequences on individuals, but just to this abstract entity possibly thousands of miles away.

I'd like to think most people aren't intentionally cruel. I think most stupid and cruel answers come from people who haven't had much life experience.

When I see questions with incorrect English I think, "Wow, what a great job! I wish I could do as well in their language." However, when I was younger, I probably wouldn't have thought that way just because of my inexperience, not because I was cruel. I was just thoughtless.

So I don't think morality has anything to do with being insulting. They probably just don't think and say the first thing that pops into their mind. If you accused them of being insulting, they would probably wonder what you were talking about!

At this point in my life, I just figure it's up to me to be the bigger person, shrug my shoulders at them, and just move on.

No matter what, you should be very careful of taking anything here seriously. All you can do is keep asking/and-or/answering in good faith and believe that someday, you will actually help or be helped. Some questions and answers are true.Keep an open mind and a sense of humor and nothing can be wrong. Insults are just someone elses sense of humor,or their prob....

Ever heard of the Asian Practice of smashing a room full of glass items to release stress? Well in answer to your question, Its more apparent, people use Yahoo Answers to vent or mini-blog. Use your common sense. Who in their right mind would actually live their lives solely based on answers found at website? Especially one that is basically opinions and not of expert quality. Remember this is not so much for learning, but it is mostly for entertainment. I hope that helps puts things into perspective in a mature polite manner.

Wish I had a nickel for every time this whiny question has been asked.
It's the internet, baby, don't let it bother you. If it bothers enough to write all this and waste points on an inane question then you need to STEP AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER, turn it off, and go out into the real world.

I guess when you post something here you are asking for people's opinions, and not everyone is polite about giving them, that's just the nature of people. I suggest you skip over any rude answers and just read the ones left by nice people!

it's freakin fun, that's why. Internet anonymity allows us to shed the trappings of basic human decency and be hilariously cruel to our fellow man; the distance the Internet provides should mean that nobody will get too upset over our insults. Nobody with a sense of humor, anyway. And if they do - big deal, they don't know it's me.

Some people are just trying to make a joke and have fun. Don't take any of this personally or too seriously.
