It won't work with the spare key either. Am I going mad - is there an actual keyhole somewhere

Does it have a little rubber push button on the door handle?? as long as the intelgent key is close to the car push the rubber button and pull the door handle. Now you know Nissan issued a recall for some intelegent key cars because cell phones can erase the keyfob. In the USA we don't see many Micra's you might have to read and understand the owners manual only if your car will let you in.

if it is the new nissan micra the only way to get into it if i remember is there should be a removeable plastic cap at the end of the handle on either side, remove this and underneath is a keyhold for emergencies
if your going to prise it off with a screwdriver cover the door panel incase you slip
