Salam dear Jamila. The difference between Sunni and Shia and Alawi is very small. All of them are muslims. You must study it from your boy friend what is the difference.I think we should base our faith to Qur'an and Hadith as a life guide given by Allah and Muhammad pbuh .Whether the leader or khalifah from the descendat of Muhammad pbuh or from his close friend is not important for us.The most impartant is whether he can be a good leader or not.But in line with Qur'an all ,muslimas should wear hijab.God has insructed it in the Qur'an surah 7 Al Araaf verse 26,surah 24 An Nisaa verse 31 and surah 33 Al Ahzab verse 59.All provies of woman including her hair should be covered..You must obey it.Muhammad pbuh in his hadith after he died, muslims will be divided into more than 70 groups. In Indonesia althouh muslims are 90% of its people more than 200 million we have no Sunni ,Shia or Alawi. We only mazhab hambali,Syafei
,Maliki etc.We have also muslims of Muhammadiyah or Nahdatul Ulama etc.Fasting is God's instruction too in surah 2 Al Baqarah verse 183 as quoted Hey all people who have faith you must fasting as has been instructed to the people before you in order to become you more devotion to Allahj.
So the right and true muslim sshould have fasting during Ramadhan and all muslimas should wear hijab when they are going out of their homes..

Alawites regard Imam Aiī as the purpose of life and the divine knowledge of the prophet Muhammad. This basically means that they hold Ali to be Allah in human form.
Each World Age, has an incarnation of God within it. Each world age thus has a person who is the base (asa) and one who is the utterer (natiq). The asas are Adam, Alexander, Khidir, Jacob, David, and possibly Paul and then Sulayman. The natiqs are Habeel, Noah, Jacob, Moses, Solomon, Jesus, and Muhammad. The true prophet of the set will disappear and leave a deputy behind who will administer for him until he returns.
Alawites do not accept converts or openly publish their texts, which are passed down from person to person, generally when someone dies. Several sources suggest that Alawism is a syncretic sect and has affinities with Christianity, Zoroastrianism, and ancient Phoenician paganism, but these claims are hard to verify, of the sect.
They are believed to celebrate Christian festivals such as Christmas, Easter, and Epiphany, as well as the Zoroastrian new year, Nawruz, along with regular Shiite festivals.
Because only one book has been translated, outsiders know little about Alawite theology. Hanna Batatu's last book has a short but reliable section on Alawite doctrine, theology, and recent debates within the community. How sincere is this rejection of bida "innovation"? There is no way to tell, but it has a long tradition within the community. The French tried to pressure leading Alawite shaykhs to declare Alawiyya a separate religion during the early 1920s, but they lost their battle because many religious leaders refused to do so. After all, Alawites declare themselves to be Muslims in their catechism and believe that Muhammad is God's messenger.
Alawites try to follow the prime example left by the Prophet Mohummad and Ali. Ali lived out of the eye of the public. Like Ali, the Alawites are too called names and rejected by the common, like Ali, Alawites also keep to themselves, and like Ali, they say that they too "worship God in private and not for show".
Although Alawites recognize the five pillars of Islam, they do not believe that anyone has the privilege of practising them because they are too pure to be performed by "any" soul. Alawites believe that there is no back door entrance to the gates of heaven (i.e. follow the five pillars and you receive the keys to heaven). Instead they believe that one should devote his life the way that the prophet Muhammed would have permitted by following the example of Ali.

It depends on what they believe if they follow the Sunnah means theachings of Quran and prophet Mohammed then they are like sunnah "Muslims" if not that means they are not Muslim you just have to ask your friend about his beliefs, because I know that some scholars say they're not considered Muslims so be careful.
If you understand Arabic here's a site talking about them
