The US has the AIM-120 AAMRAM, a very smart Medium Range Missile, and the AIM-54 Phoenix Long Range Air-to-Air missile. You will also see FIM-92 Stinger missiles being deployed on attack helicopters. The interesting thing about missiles is that as electronics technology progresses, you can upgrade missiles with smaller, more powerful and smarter electronics. That's one of the reasons the venerable MIM-23 Hawk SAM missile is still in use with the US. It was fast, lethal, and keeps getting smarter all the time! The same can be said for the AIM-9 Sidewinders, which have been upgraded many times and can tell the difference between a flare and a jet engine!

The AIM-120 AAMRAM is the premier long range, radar guided air-to-air missile. The AIM-9 Sidewinder is so good that it has been copied by almost every other nation who produces infared heatseeking missiles.

The longest range of an air-to-air missile is the AIM-54 Phoenix, but they may no longer be in service, as the only fighter to carry it (the Grumman F-14 Tomcat) has been retired.

It is difficult to tell who has the best missles because they have not had a direct comparison in many years.
The AMRAAM is a good long range missle with active homing. The Sidewinder has been improving steadily for over 40 years.
The latest generations of Russian missles have very good specs as well. The Chinese use a lot of Russian designs.
Another major factor is the ability of the missles to defeat active and passive coutermeasures, such as jammers, flares, and 'low observable technologies' stealth in other words.

well the united states and Russia both have the same lvl of technology when it comes to missile defense systems.

this article is about 3 years old, but it is still pretty accurate. Raytheon has the best sam design right now, and supplies only to key nato members.

Russia, without question.
Their equivalents have better range, better engagement envelopes - just better in every aspect.

Heres a typical example, the R 77 (Russia's AMRAAM).

At the bottom of the page is a list of all Russian missiles.

They beat Western weapons hands down.

I really would have to put the techno sector to the US right now. And even for the future. We have things developed and things we don't have a clue about. We will know about it when it is in use....Air to air......nobody has more advanced weapons then us..........

Think about this, the stealth fighter that came out in the gulf war in 1991, was being developed in the 70's..........wonder what they're doing now?...What I'm saying is, the public didn't have a clue about the stealth fighter.........
