I don't a steamer and it is too dark outside to use the grill. I need to steam my sweet potato NOW without peeling the skin off first. I will do that after I steam it.

So, HOW DO I STEAM A SWEET POTATO?

I do 2 things...

1 place them in a large pot with water.. and boil until you can stick you forl thru and they are tender.

2. Poke with fork and microwave.. on potato setting or 10-15 min , depending on size, ammount , or microwave , times may vary.

When the potato is done .. peel will come off easily... let cool so you dont burn yourself.

First of all, sticking the sweet potato in a microwave is not called steaming. Place the potato in a pot with boiling water or STEAM it! The skin should come off easily when peeling.

Yikes, 20 minutes is way too long in the microwave...check it after three minutes, then keep adding a minute at a time until it's soft when you squeeze it. Also turn it over and around each time you check it so it cooks evenly. I've never had it take more than 6 minutes.

The best way is to bake it. Scrub it, poke holes for steam to escape, then bake at 400 for an hour. Again, the squeeze test will tell you when it's done. I put foil under mine, because a syrup will leak out and mess up the oven as it bakes if you don't have something under it to catch it.

Oh and NEVER microwave your food wrapped in plastic! It causes carcinogenic chemicals to leach into the food.

My mum usually wraps the sweet potato in some banana leaf and steams it in a saucepan with water.

Wash the sweet potato clean and then just steam it. Or u can just boil it, it turns out just as fine or even more moist and delicious.

Take a wok, fill it up with water, put a metal grill thingy on top, and place whatever you want to steam it.

I have no idea. I just peel them, cut them into large cubes. Then I put them in a big pot of cold salted water.
Bring them to a boil then reduce the heat & simmer them until they are really really tender, then drain them.

Wutz it: Visaja's term "leach" IS correct, look it up...Thank You!
