Origins
Bred to adorn the laps of the Chinese emperors during the Shang dynasty (1766-1122 BC),[3] in East China, where they were known as "Lo-Chiang-Sze" or "Foo"[3][4] (ceramic foos, transmogrified into dragon, with their bulging eyes are very Pug-like). The Pug's popularity spread to Tibet, where they were mainly kept by monks, and then went onto Japan, and finally Europe.[3]
Professor Ludvic von Schulmuth studied canine origins by studying the skeletal remains of dogs found in human settlements as long as ten thousand years ago.[citation needed] Schulmuth created a genealogical tree of Tibetan dogs that shows the "Gobi Desert Kitchen Midden Dog", a scavenger, evolved into the "Small Soft-Coated Drop-Eared Hunting Dog". From this dog evolved the Tibetan Spaniel, Pekingese, and Japanese Chin.[citation needed] Another branch coming down from the "Kitchen Midden Dog" gave rise to the Papillon and Long-haired Chihuahua and yet another "Kitchen Midden Dog" branch to the Shih Tzu and the Pug.[citation needed]

The breed was first imported in the late 16th and 17th centuries by merchants and crews from the Dutch East Indies Trading Company.[3] The Pug later became the official dog of the House of Orange.[3] In 1572, a Pug saved the Prince of Orange's life by barking at an assassin.[5] A Pug also traveled with William III and Mary II when they left the Netherlands to ascend to the throne of England in 1688.[3] This century also saw Pugs' popularity on the rise in other European countries. In Spain, they were painted by Goya,[3] in Italy Pugs dressed in matching jackets and pantaloons sat by the coachmen of the rich,[3] and in Germany and France. Pugs appear several times as footnotes to history.[3] Sometimes, they were used for Scent hounds. They were used by the military to track animals or people, and were also employed as the guard's dogs.

One of the best ways to get honest information on a specific breed is at a dog show; just my opinion. Find out when the next local dog show is in your area and what time and ring the pugs are showing at. Most breeders are happy to talk to you. Just make sure you don't bother them when they have a dog in the ring or on deck. Also you are able to see first hand what their stock looks like. Good luck, pugs are very comical.

They can have some health problems. Respritory, eye, and skin problems. I've heard that some of their eyes will pop out. They can be very noisy, just because of the respritory problems, they snort a lot. They can be active, so do need exercise and obedience training like other dogs. I've also heard from pug owners that they shed quite a bit. Any dog is a big responsibility and take a lot of commitment and care.

I have never had a pug, but I did have a shitzu, and my sisters had Pekingeses. I do know that if you get one you need to keep a bottle of eye drops around because their eyes are known for popping out if they get hurt or extremely overly excited. If that happens you should apply the drops to keep moist until you get to the vet which would need to be asap.

they are great dogs except for their snorting problem, but they say you get used to that.
