This comparison just dawned on me and I was amazed at its aptness. Atheists are like the mutants on X-Men because we have progressed beyond the need to believe in imaginary concepts and the need to have a moral code based on a primitive ideology. Just like the mutants have evolved beyond the limitations of a typical human body and also, like the mutants, atheists are a distinct minority (in the USA, that is).

The mutants have split into two distinct groups – Xavier’s crew try to promote peace between mutants and non-mutants whilst Magneto’s crew hatch evil plans and are hell-bent on terrorizing non-mutants. Atheists seem to have split the same way as well because there are some that accept that they are a minority and don’t try to push their non-belief onto people who still do believe. These are like Xavier’s crew whilst the ones like Magneto’s crew use every opportunity to ridicule the absurd beliefs and primitive ideologies of the god-believers.

I’d either be a Magneto type figure of at least part of his crew; which one would you be?

I'd be "Sweet-tooth"
A mutant whose powers arrived at puberty and grow more powerful each year. I would project powerful energy beams from my hands by utilizing a rare human organ the "Brain" to channel electrical bolts through my fingers, rendering my foes paralyzed.

But whenever I use my powers, my blood-sugar drops swiftly so I keep M&Ms on me like Rush Limbaughs' pain-killers.

I'd be with Xavier tho...

My main enemies are the Cavity Creeps, O.B.C.D. and the Christian Sentinals, seeking out "gifted" ones like me for "reprogramming" or termination.

And I shouldn't be hated or feared because I've evolved a little faster than some.

I've already got my costume. :)

But yes, I'll be with Xavier. I've never stopped loving religious people. Most of them mean well. They're just easily swayed by unscrupulous people like Jerry Falwell, Bush, Robertson, etc...

Most of the religious fundamentalists that cause all the problems in this country, don't actually represent the majority of Christians. (Just as the Islamic terrorists don't represent the majority of Muslims)

But the moderate ones PUT UP with them. And against a non-believer, they will even SIDE with them. And that is where they fail.

Actually, mutants are more like the GLBT community: Few accept them because the unknown is feared.

Ian McKellen (Coincidentally, an atheist) saw this similarity and sought to input a 'coming out' scene in "X 2: X-men United," where Ashmore's character - Iceman - explains that he is a mutant to his family.

I would be on Xavier's side, since, in the X-men series...oh, wait, I'm not going to spoil it for you.

Looks like my secret identity is blown!

I am a "transhuman" - a genetic deviation from the normal human genome that gives me immunity to certain "memes" (mind virus) such as religion. Hence, I'm a confirmed skeptic about a lot of things - but especially religious beliefs which rely on "faith".

(Oh, did I mention that I can change my physical appearance and voice to mimic others?)

The mutants represent any given minority. The story has universal appeal for that reason, since we are all minorities in some way.

Interesting.

But I don't think I'd enjoy being labeled a mutant. The stigma of being atheist is difficult enough.

A better comparison would be adults to children. Adults know who they are and how the world works. Children have invisible friends and believe in fairy tales.

I'd agree that Atheist as mutants but that's about it.

Atheism is just a faith based religion like all the rest but it denies the existance of a spiritual world which makes up half of our existance.

I see your connection, not only to atheists but to christians as well (in your second paragraph). It sounds like human group dynamics 101.
