A "day" doesn't mean literally 24 earthly hours?
We all know that the world goes in cycles...the orbit changes, etc...
What if one of those cycles is what is what is refered to as a "day"...so instead of "on the 6th day, God created man" but it means "during the 6th cycle of the world, God created man"...
Just a thought, what do you think about it?

GENESIS 1:1 "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."
How is that the planets before the sun? As far as I know the sun is in the heavens...is it not?

That is a very good point and question. In fact, in other books of the bible, like Daniel, days DO mean entire orbital cycles or years. Pretty cool, huh? Also, I forget where, but it says that, to the Lord, a single day is as a thousand years and a thousands years are like a day. Since God is not trapped or limited by time, He can to what He wants when He wants...literally. I see it as a fast forward and rewind on a VCR tape.

Well the Bible also says that all the plants were created before the Sun and the stars which were then followed by all the animals.
If you are trying to stretch the Bible to get it to match science, you still have a lot of pulling to do.
Added: So why does it specifically say Sun and stars on day four separate from the firmament (whatever that is)??? The order is totally different. If you accept science's account you are saying Genesis is wrong rather you like it or not.

A day does not literally mean 24 hours. You're right, it's just symbolic, the Bible is all symbolic, don't take things too literal. But it is interesting to talk about. I mean I'm a Catholic but theres alot of things I don't believe. I've been to private school for 7 years and spent time with alot of priests.
Something interesting to think about, many Saints, as well as the bible says that women cannot be equal to Men, if this is true then no women who want equal rights can be Catholic. I don't have any opinion on this, its something we can debate about.

A "day" does not mean 24 hours only, so this is a very plausible idea.
A day is defined as 86,400 seconds. Each second is currently defined as
… the duration of 9,192,631,770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state of the caesium-133 atom.
This makes the SI day last exactly 794,243,384,928,000 of those periods.
In the 19th century it had also been suggested to make a decimal fraction (1⁄10,000 or 1⁄100,000) of an astronomic day the base unit of time. This was an afterglow of decimal time and calendar, which had already been given up

Actually, since the old testament was written in Greek, the word they translated to day meant literally a day, or an eon of time. That is why some christians believe in creational evolution. They believe in evolution, but God started it and influenced all the events.

I've thought about it this way for many years now......I think the Bible is describing eras here and not literal days made up of 24 hours......we have no concept of time as God does.....10,000 years to us is but a blink of his eyes
