If you are sending the letter to a state or federal location - you will need the prisoner's full name & inmate ID number.
If the prisioner is in a local jurisdiction (county jail) - then you may just need the address, inmate name & cell block.

Send the letter directly to the prison and expect that it will be opened before being given to the prisoner.

You will need the persons inmate number. Many states have a website detailing all of their prisoners. Use your states inmate look-up feature and it should tell you not only their inmate number, but also the mailing address of the facility they are incarcerated in. The website won't necessarily tell you the exact cell or unit. Without the inmate number your mail will probably be returned.

Make sure you put a COMPLETE return address on the envelope- your letter will not be delivered to him without a return address.
