Fleas eat blood - feed it your own blood or your boyfriend's. Not the cat's, that's mean.
Make sure you get a collar and leash for it. Seriously. Check this out:

Ack! Fleas are nasty disease spreading creatures!! Would you be asking if he wanted to keep cockroaches? I hope not!
I'm guessing you & your bf never heard of the Black Plague that wiped out 1/3 of Europe's population; it was spread by fleas that lived on rats. If I were you and care at all about your cat (who I'm sure does NOT want fleas but won't be able to get rid of them if you all are keeping them as pets!) I'd get rid of your bf...or at least convince him to get better taste in pets. It's not fair to your cat to have fleas around as pets, and as they breed and overpopulate, YOU will become the fleas meals. Once the cat is covered with them they will begin to feed off of you and your bf...and by then it will be a huge task to rid your home of them. Worry about taking care of your cat or find him a better home...then you can keep all the fleas you want as pets.

Won't fleas be able to like... get through any air holes in their "home"?
How are you going to contain them?
Every time you open the box to feed them they'll jump out and you'll end up with fleas breeding in your carpet and your clothes... Pretty gross, for you... and pretty horrible for your cat!
I think you might want to reconsider getting a pet flea, but good luck anyway...

I really hate to break it to you, but the reason the flea was on your cat is because the flea was eating your cat. If your boyfriend insists on keeping 'Mr Jumpy', perhaps your boyfriend should donate himself as the new breakfast.

cat fleas eat cat blood, dog fleas eat dog blood, and so on. your bf should get a human flea, then it can live in his hair.

Fleas do consume small organisms such as tapeworm eggs, but blood plays a large role in their diet.
