Cause They Couldn't Fit It In The Mailbox Happens To Me All The Time. & Unless You Were Required To Sign For The Package It's Perfectly Legit. The Only Way For That Not To Happen Is If You Know Your Going To Receive A Large Package You Can Call The USPS With The Tracking Number & Ask Them To Hold It For Pick Up. Or Leave A Note On Your Door Please Do Not Leave Packages Redeliver. Or You Can Leave A Note Asking Them To Deliver It To A Nearby Neighbor Note: The Notes Have To Be Signed...

Yes, when the package can't fit the mailbox the mailman always comes up to my door and either leaves it there or knocks on the door and delivers to me in person. Sometimes if they consider it necessary they will leave a authorized note for you to take it to an USPS station and pick up your package there.

If it was a item sent with delivery confirmation (regardless of size) it would require a signature, alot of online companies require signatures for expensive items to cover themselves. Could have been too big for the box... or if the carrier believed it "looked expensive" and needed extra care, they may have brought it to the door. USPS delivers to the box and parcels to the door and UPS (brown truck) usually puts at door/garage and may need signature.

Maybe it wouldn't fit in the mailbox. I would have gifts sent to a relatives house and let them know ahead of time that it would be coming so they know not to say anything to you know who.....
That's what my new hubby does....

Only the mail that goes through the post office is allowed to go in the box. The UPS does not go through the post office.

It could be too big to fit in the mailbox, but the main reason is that it's not mail.

It is illegal to place anything in a mailbox other than US mail.
UPS is a private company, United Parcel Service.
