If someone does something he doesn't like, he either smites them, or sends them to burn in hell. If someone is a good person, but not into him, does the torture of unrequited love force him into also damning them to hell? What about the people that DO do what he says - does he just keep "testing" them like an emotionally unbalanced child to make sure they really mean it?

Just think: The universe is being watched over by a crazed, emotionally immature, egomaniacal and sociopathic egocentric childish personality with unlimited resources, unlimited power and weaponry, unlimited mobility........not to mention incredible stamina and a willingness to demonstrate his uncontrollable temper at any time, all the time, everywhere he goes. And we thought George W Bush didnt have any role models!

You may not believe it, but I asked, or rather pointed this out during Sunday school. I think I was about 15 at the time. I love that I am seeing this question asked here. I cannot profess that I am Christian - I am more of an eclectic that leans a bit towards Eastern philosophy and spirituality. I have read the bible several times - and used it as a ref. when I hear a self-righteous pious person spit out some venomous damnation of my immortal soul. I had a preacher once say that the old testament is the "Law" and the New is the "Grace" - And this to me does seem an awful lot like God "coming of age". This is why I choose what rings true for me from each religion I have studied and discard the rest. I know I may be flawed, but my essence and soul are good. I love all beings - and if there was a hell I'd do my best to shut it down. I hope I can be Bodhisattva-esk

This is the funniest thing I've heard an atheist say in a long time.

I respect your way of thinking, even though I'm a Christian...it's funny, and thought-provoking because if a kindergarten child destroys something simply because he doesn't like it, he receives a time out...but then, God has been around for so long that I don't think 5 minutes would be much of an issue for him, it would have to be like 2 billion years, and I think that in that time span, the world would PROBABLY fall apart.

Heehee! I like you!

I agree with Ryan, God is not immature. He is very patient, especially with me. Based on the Bible, there are many reasons for good and not so pleasant experiences. Sin brings a lot of undesireable consequences, and even those, God can turn into a blessing for those who love Him. When God tests His children and ALLOWS illness and other problems in their lives, it could be compared to a tree. The wind makes the tree become stronger.

If the statement " as we learn god learns" is true then don't you think that an appropriate or best perception of that would be a definiton of immaturity ( not in the negitive sense but from expanded awareness)?
God is said to be omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent and nothing said about being perfect.
Like God, in your imperfection, don't you want to be a better being and work at it or just accept being a fearful, angry, lustful, insecure, weak, and egotistical, like most people. Please that wasn't a put down. Most of us suck, real bad like.
God has an plan and he may change it, so what. Get over it and love as much as you can.

I think Sigmund Freud said this as well as anyone . Religion is like a neurotic child and society with god is in it's adolescence and possibly a necessary step to evolving into a mature adult society . Freud was an Atheists hope I didn't butcher his statements that much by paraphrasing .

That is completely wrong. First of all there no no hell. There is no burning and suffering for eternity if you do not do what he says. Do you really think that such a good God would create a place like 'hell' for his own creation to burn forever and ever. He is a just God. He loves righteousness. God does not test us. We were created with our own free will to do good or bad. Satan was cast out of heaven and called the ruler of this earth. He challenged God's position. So God now lets us prove ourselves to him. Are we gonig to follow him? Or are wwe oing to follow the ruler of this earth. Lie, not repent of our sins, hurt people, give in to fleshly desires. But God sees all of our hearts. He kows who can change and who can not. God has not caused all the pain and suffering. He has aloud it, but not forever. It will be over soon.

God gave rules. God gave freewill.
What happens to you is because of what you do or what society, as a whole, do.
YES, freewill of every person does conflict and results to the "testing".

but what if you get cancer?
.....simple, cancer causing bacteria and viruses are out there..God doesnt "magically" insert those diseases to you. Overall, diseases are caused by infection of pathogens...
And keep in mind pathogens are disease causing bacteria, which are of course living. and they live (survive) by YOU dying...ever heard of competition in the food chain...ever heard of survival of the fittest?
BOTTOM LINE....God do not give you bad things...society does....

And why does God smite bad people?
one bad apple will rot the entire basket of good apples.
basically throw away the bad one.

God has told people what will happen if you do this or do that..go to heaven..hell...or purgatory...

My only question is...IF homosexuality is a sin and is somehow genetic....are all homosexuals condemned to hell by birth?

Who is immature here? God? Does you know the meaning of God. You perceive God to be immature or think He is? Think very carefully of what you write unless you don't mind being a fool to the others. Can you comprehend God? You don't even know yourself so do think you can understand God? If you can't respect God, then please respect your Parents. Give them the dignity, at least ,for whatever you do does reflect on their upbringing. of you.

EVERYONE has done something He does not like, namely sin, but He has not "smote" them all or sent them all to hell. He has forgiven and blessed all who ask to be forgiven. He does not send "good" people to hell. There are no "good" people, because we are all sinners.
It is not about being good; it is about being forgiven.
