The name Babylon means "gate of the gods". It had nothing to do with the myth of the confusion of the languages written about in Genesis. That is just a story.

The point of the Tower of Babel from a Human point of view was to reach into Heaven and save themselves if God decided to flood the world again. Since God had already promised not to flood the world again this showed disbelief on the part of Humans.

No it was not completed because God mixed up the languages.

The builders of the Tower were sending a message to G-d that they did not want to be under His rule. Therefore He separated them into 70 nations, under 70 ministering angels, and that was represented by their 70 languages. Instead of having only G-d directly overhead, they now had a go-between.

The tower of Babel was built in order to reach the heavens and pull God from His throne. The complete unity of those who undertook such a thing could not be tolerated by God. Speech was divided as a way to slow down the progress of man becoming a god.

People were told to spread out through the earth. They started worshipping false gods, stayed in place, and went to build this tower, for all to see their city, and come to it and take part in their ways. God confounded their languages so that they had no choice but to stop, and moved on.

Probably meant as a story to teach God's power and his seperation from the Creation.

Mankind was trying to create a shortcut to heaven. A shortcut to enlightenment if you will. The language which was confounded was telepathy. It is coming full circle.
There is a point to it....mankind was coming into it's own power too soon.
