It sounds like you probably have the points gaped too far out if you are not getting a spark. Also make sure you have no cracks in the cap and you put the wires back in the correct firing order. I know this sounds dumb but what about the rotor is it in good shape.
One of my suggestions is to buy the Petronix Ignitor for your VW. Its one of the best upgrades you can do making your car have electronic ignition without replacing any stock parts. This unit was created originally for VW's and now they make them for a lot of classic cars. You won't even know you switched except no more points. I sent you a link. I have them on 3 cars they are great.

If it ran before you changed the points then make sure the point gap is correct. If that is ok then make sure the point wire is not grounded to the distributor. There is usually a little plastic or fiber washer as an insulator and a lot of people miss that when replacing points.

Good answers by all. But be sure points are on the peak of distributor lobe before setting gap. I have bought conderensrs that were bad, when new. No offense but be sure u plug point wire back to coil on left side of coil.

Not sure about your automotive experience. Did you gap the points to .016"? How about checking the coil and see if the wires are on tight, then the condenser is hooked up and not grounded.
good luck with it.
