I wanna buy my friend an "I Love My Boyfriend" tshirt, but my sister insists that I shouldn't buy it at all, for it would implies that I "support" it, which I don't. Why? Because I don't have a boyfriend. And I told her that just because we buy something that has a statement on it, it doesnt really mean that we support that statement? Especially in this case, since I'm buying it for a friend, not for my own personal use.
Was I right?

You were right!!! You just bought it for a friend... But if you buy statement shirts and wear it you can't say that you don't "support" the statement.

If you are purchasing a shirt for yourself, it will be universally understood that you support the statement. However, if you are purchasing it for a friend, the clerk may think you support the statement, but certainly no one else should. If your friend has a boyfriend she loves, the shirt is fine as a gift. If she does not have a boyfriend, it's probably not appropriate.

With something like that, no, I don't think it would count as "supporting" it, because there's not really anything to "support." It simply implies that you have a boyfriend, but things like that are everywhere, so it isn't taken literally.

With other shirts, though, yes, it is about supporting a statement. Athiests don't wear Christian t-shirts. People who don't use drugs or drink don't usually buy shirts with drug or alcohol related humor.

I personally wouldn't buy a T-shirt that had a saying I didn't support. Buying one for a friend is fine, if it's something that SHE supports. If your friend does indeed love her boyfriend, then that T-shirt was fine for her. If she doesn't have a boyfriend, then it doesn't make any sense!

not if you're buying it for a friend, as you are buying it with the assumption that the friend condones the statement written on it. But "I love My Boyfriend" isn't a particularly contoversial statement anyway.

Does your friend really love her boyfriend? If she does, then it's okay to buy her that shirt.

You are condoning the statement; otherwise, why have it?
