i'd really like to paint my small bedroom's walls a dark cobalt blue, dark purple, or dark chocolate brown because those are the colors that relax me and i feel they'd make the room more intimate and sophisticated (my furniture/etc. is modern, clean lines, etc.). i'm wondering if these colors will visually recede or if they would make it seem like a tiny cave. what are your opinions? thanks in advance.

According to Kristan Cunningham of The Rachael Ray Show & HGTV's "Design On A Dime," dark colors in small room do make the walls appear to recede. Watch the video from this link & see how much better the rooms look with the darker colors:

I think I would go with the dark purple. Sounds rich & unique.

Dark colored walls make small spaces look smaller. Light colors open up a room. If you have one window, chances are the room is small. You can still paint your walls brown, just brighten up the room with lots of lighting and bright colors (preferably variations of white, greens, blues, purples, yellows, oranges, or pinks.) Mirrors also make a room look larger. Don't limit your taste to the size of your room! Work around it! I'm sure it'll look great. Chocolate or espresso brown is one of my favorite colors for walls. If you like it, make it work! Don't leave out the possibility of painting an accent wall! That may make all the difference in your room's appearance.

Absolutely. Dark colors will close in a room and make it appear even smaller. However, dark colors will also make a room feel more cozy.

Smaller room, but I dunno, if you play around with shape and line you might be able to get a different effect.
