Keeping the Sabbath day holy. It's still a law on the books, right? So why do nice Christian folks get out of church and head down to Denny's or Bigboys and have lunch? Why are the malls filled with people dressed up fresh out of church, shopping? Sure, they are not working on their Sunday, but they are causing other people to work on Sunday to serve them. Money is being exchanged--that is the token of "work." Don't you consider that you are relying on a class of people to serve you, and that makes you "elevating" yourself above them, which is also wrong?

Consider all the people who are scheduled to work on Sundays at malls, grocery store, ect. Sure, they would still be there to serve the people who don't care to follow the commandment, but why do you participate? Stores would not stay open on Sundays if they didn't get your business on Sundays!

Yeah, I was one of those people who had to work on Sunday b/c it was the only way I could feed my family--it also kept me from often times being able to worship at church, myself

Actually, Jiraiya, I kind of agree with the points you make

Okay--so our debate concludes that we do need to get rid of the ten commandments, right? So what was the big deal with getting rid of the 10 C's at the Alabama supreme courthouse?!!!

First of all Saturday is the Sabbath- second, most Christians pick and choose the laws they can hold over other people's heads and claim "we are not under the law" when it comes to them making changes and following God's commands- Today's christians are, unfortunately, much like the pharisees of Jesus' day.
The Jews did this very thing, they would not light a fire on the Sabbath but many had no problem hiring "nonbelievers" to light it for them- even though the word specifically says that you are not to make your manservant or maidservant or even your animals work.
It is not about what you do or don't do, it is all aboutthe attitude of the heart, but when the heart attitude is right, you are much more likely to do the right things!

The Bigger question is why don't they see that the Sabbath is the 7th day. Seventh as in Saturday. Any Dictionary will attest to this. Also the Bible attest to this. If you look at the story of Jesus crucifixion and resurrection, it shows Mary heading out to the tomb on the "First" day of the week. We all know that Christ rose from the dead on a Sunday... the First day, which would mean... the day before had to be the seventh. The Greenwich observatory which keeps track of time for the entire planet has even stated that although there have been changes in the months and yearly schedules, no change has ever been made in the days of the week!

So, with this in mind.... people who are making others work on Sunday, really aren't breaking the law. However, by not celebrating the actual Sabbath that God blessed and made holy..... that is where the law is broken.

It is amazing how people will tout the 10 commandments and not realize what they are doing as far as the Sabbath...however, it is the only commandment that says "Remember'. God knew people would forget.

EDIT: Jesus did obey the Sabbath, He just showed us that it was lawful to do what is good on the Sabbath. The Jews of that time, were not doing anything. Not even helping others or feeding those who were hungry. He showed them they had taken the command so far that they were actually harming people in the process. The day was suppose to be a blessing and not a curse and the people of that time treated it like a curse.

EDIT AGAIN: The Law that was done away with at the Cross was the ceremonial law, otherwise it would be ok for Christians to kill, disobey their parents, have other God's...etc.

Alot of people have long hours during the week and may not have time to get errands done, except on their weekends off when they are not mandated by their employers to work.

There have been times where I have rushed to Walmart on a Sunday after church to grab last minute supplies for a childs birthday, or medicine when my kids are sick. This doesn't mean that I don't love God.

I certainly do obey God by loving my children and being faithful to my husband. I believe that no person can obey ALL of the Ten Commandments ALL AT ONCE. If it were possible to obey all of them, all of the time, then we would not be sinners so we would not need God.

If I didn't rush to the store to get the medicine, only because it was Sunday, would my child then die from a fever? Would I then be a murderer?

When is the Sabbath? It is the seventh day! Look at the calendar and count, Sunday is 1, Monday is 2, Tuesday is 3, Wednesday is 4, Thursday is 5, Friday is 6 and Saturday is 7.

The Catholic Church change the their day of worshiping their gods to Sunday. Check out the article "Rome's Challenge" at http://www.aloha.net/~mikesch/chalng.htm

The article says the Sabbath is the 7th day and that they changed the day to Sunday.

Also it is up to you to obey the sabbath day. Not every one at this time but they will when Jesus returns and sets up His government. The Ten Commandment will be the Law of the World.

Search "What day is the Sabbath?" and read the articles with your Bible to make sure they are saying what Jesus had written in it.

You do your part. Let God worry about everyone else.

Read your Bible and obey Jesus the Christ teachings.

Consider this... Do you follow the bible to a "T"?

If so, then you have to believe that the 10 commandments were of the first testament. If you follow the first testament, then you have to live by it. ALL of the 10 commandments (plus the 20 or so that were added on later). Which also means .. for all the sins you make, you have to sacrifice an animal to atone for you sins. Any Christian will tell you that. However, the reason why the second testament came about was to live by a new set of laws... the Laws of Love (God's Laws)..

A Sabbath day, is a day of rest.. it allows someone to understand that they can just take a breather if they wanted too... Did God say that they 7th day was a sabbath or a day of rest when He was creating "in the beginning". AND how long was each day?.. The explanation of Day and Night are clear "in the beginning" of the bible..

If you can decipher the beginning of the bible.. you will truly SEE THEEE TRUTH!...

You are confusing a couple of concepts. Sabbath is a word meaning 'rest' more than anything else. It is not necessarily the day of worship, although that is it's common use. There are many Christians who must work on Sunday, but keep a sabbath day on another day of the week. I had to do this for years, attend church saturday night or sunday morning, but rested on my midweek day off.

The Jewish Sabbath, among Orthodox again is more of a 'back to nature day'. An observant Jew may walk 8 miles to synagogue on the sabbath, that is hardly resting. But he won't as much as turn on the radio, because there was no radio in God's created nature. In Orthodox however, any rabbi will tell you, you must do as you must, and if you are required to work a sabbath, you do. Imagine the day we elect an orthodox president, are we to believe he may not work on a sunday the next time the muslims bomb us.
Lastly, Jesus came and fulfilled the law for us, so we as Christians are 'technically' no longer under the Law of Moses. Jesus took care of that for us. Jesus gives us the most important commandment...'Love thy neighbor as yourself"

It is not the Christian that makes people work on Sunday, it is the money hungry owners who open it on Sunday. And stores would be open on Sunday because of the owners decision, whether Christians went or not. And have you ever considered that some people work six days a week and Sunday is the only time the family has of doing those things together. Don't judge Christians for being human. And you can't blame them for owners, who are probably not believers, choice to keep their stores open.

So your saying that stores would not be open on Sunday if Christians did not go to them? You give us a lot of credit. So atheists don't shop on Sunday? But if the stores did close on Sunday, because religious people didn't shop then, some atheists would complain that they are being prejudiced against them. Go figure.

Mary, as already pointed out, yours is a good point. Myself, being a Seventh-day Adventist Christian. I attend church on Saturday (God's Sabbath) and not only do I not work during the Sabbath hours (from sundown Friday evening until sundown Saturday evening), but I don't participate in any of the usual activities of society either. That means not only do I not buy or sell on God's Sabbath, but I also do as little as possible toward contributing to others having to work on God's Sabbath, too. By that I mean that I don't go so far as to not turn on any lights, or the heater, but I don't go out on the town either.

Sorry I'm late......

The sabbath command is an old covenant requirement and not a new covenant requirement.

We are warned by Paul not to let ourselves be entangled with the old covenant (Galatians 5:1).

If you believe you and others are supposed to not work on either sabbath or Sunday, you are wrong big time.

You cannot take old covenant points of law and apply them to Christians who were never a party to that covenant. It is wrong; it is a subversion of the Christian soul. Read Acts 15.

You can only worry about the condition of your own soul before God. Worrying about others cannot cleanse you from sin. I do not think God is offended however when a family goes out for lunch or dinner on the sabbath. God is in favor of families spending time together and I think eating out as a family on the sabbath does honor God if done in thanksgiving.
I believe that keeping the sabbath holy means not going to bars or casinos or "R" rated movies. Remember, when Jesus was challenged about working on the Sabbath, He replied: It is ok to do good on the sabbath. Going to a family movie, eating out, playing miniature golf, doing all these things as a family does not dishonor God. Come home from an afternoon out as a family, study Gods word together, sing hymns, pray together and I think you are keeping the Sabbath Holy.
