I have seen no documented proof that Cayley actually did invent the seat belt. At least not one for the automobile or for the airplane, as neither had been invented by the time he died in 1857. He may have used some type of restraint device in his experimental gliders, but there is no proof that he is the one who invented it.

Have you ever heard the expression " If there is a need , someone will find a solution" ?Well it goes something like that. Or " Necessity is the mother of invention"?Whatever the occasion George needed some restraint and realizing that centrifugal force would keep him moving developed a system to stop his body. A seat belt or seat harness was developed . Seat belt development in the states was introduced through auto racing and boat racing.

Seat belts came into common use in passenger cars in the early 50s in the US but Mercedes was a few years earlier in Europe. However, if you look into the racing world you'll see seat belts in European road racing way back into the late 20s and, again, I believe it was Mercedes who was the first.

If he did invent the seat belt, it was probably to keep him in the seat while flying his helicopter or plane...turbulence can be pretty rough especially in a smaller aircraft.
