One word. FEAR.
Fear of other people, accidents, danger etc.
It all seems to stem from the need for survival and yes it's very destructive/chain reaction because most of the time underneath it all we are good people.
I truly believe that if everyone could know beyond a doubt that if you are kind and loving, no one would take advantage of you, everyone would be. It's exhausting being on guard all the time isn't it?
Check out this book that's really eye-opening "The power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle.
Good Luck and as Ghandi said "...we must be the change that we wish to see in the world."

People are desensitized by the constant media coverage of mass murder kidnappings child molesters and on and on. Also people dont worry about each other anymore because we live in a world of bigger and better so everyone has to make sure they get theirs before someone else does. Everyone is into themselves parents teachers everywhere you look you see it. If neighborhoods came together communities would come together then cities and states. People would care because they would know the people around them. Back in the day communities did things as a whole looked out for one another. Until people start looking outside themselves it will only get worse. Families need to be units again. Parents need to be parents and then changes may happen

I think some of it has to do with the mobility of people- in the old days you knew that you were probably going to see these people for the rest of your life so make nice.
Some of it has to do with insecurity from the complexity of society today-some people only feel in control when the are being nasty to others.
Parenting has a lot to do with it also-the boomers raised a "me" generation on the advice of Dr. Spock, Mr. Rogers, etc., who think they are the focus of the world and everyone else is a lesser being.

Big cities. AGes ago people were nicer and more polite because the communities are small and everybody knows everyone. It's harder to be rude if you know everyone.

It's not just America, but many, many people around the world, especially in European countries, have turned away from God. Have become very selfish and undisciplined, given up their morals and good character. So many have become politically correct. But mostly, it is people turning away from God.

You can thank the baby boomer generation for being so self centered and lazy. Their parenting skills were worthless. They think they are owed whatever they want.

I agree with you. I also think that the problem is that people do not discipline their children or teach them any manners.
