Dogs can smell anything. However, because tobacco is legal, I can't imagine that any drug dogs would be trained to search for it. The police want drug dogs to look for drugs. They can't be bothered to have a bunch of false alarms due to packs of cigarettes.

Dogs CAN learn to smell knives (metal) in theory, but there is no need. The only reason cops teach dogs to smell out things is because cops can't smell it out themselves. They're humans. And humans aren't capable of smelling out things without a very strong odor. That's why they use dogs. People can find illegal things like knives or guns by using tools like metal detectors and such. Dogs are trained to find things that humans can't.

Depends on if they have been trained to detect tobacco smell.
Most PD's do not train for tobacco odor. Tobacco is not an illegal substance.

They may be trained to smell tobacco, since it's it often illegal to have it it prison. I have no idea if they are though, it's just a guess because they're often used to sniff out stuff in cells.

Considering that tobacco is NOT an illegal narcotic - there is NOTHING you have to worry about. Scent dogs can detect just about ANYTHING - but will only react on what they have been TRAINED to look for ;););)
