ok I vistited in june year before last
frankly dont catch the train I did and it was 11am (not lunch or starting work etc) and it was like the bombay express - packed
taxis are cheap and well generally cheerful however make sure you ask the driver before you get in if the speak english also to note ask if the are having a good day or something like that to check they arent just saying yes for the sake of saying yes to speaking english. Try and aviod tuk tuk (open carts attached to a motorcycle engine) they are dangerous and the smog/ exhust fumes will kill you, only take them if absolutely nessicary or you have a short trip (novelty factor only)
sight seeing is sparse but do check out the snake/ crocdile farms and the various temples. it is also cool to take a guided tour or cooking tou as this will take you onto the streets to see how it really is in this bustling centre of humanity.
make sure your hotel is airconditioned and witha pool is a good idea- it will take you a while to get used to the smog etc.
Try and avoid travel during peak periods 7-9am and 3-6pm as the traffic is a dead set killer
a day trip to the river kwai is a good experience make sure you take a trip on the river in the long boats (motorised) it a great way to get to the bridge.
Night life- well of course you have nana plaza etc for those seeking to experience the underbelly of bangkok.
bars are plentiful as are great places to eat.
I would suggest unless you have a strong constitution or dont mind huggin a toilet bowl for a couple of hours you eat at restraunts. The rule of thumb is that if you look in and there are other westerner in the establishment then it is fine to eat there. Make sure you do experience some authentic thai cusine though, it is fantastic!
Anyway enjoy yourself and shop up a storm
Cheers

Bangkok Palace hotel is stable yet once you pass there in warm seasons, you will discover cockroaches. this is 4*, mid-priced and close to the middle. the staff are useful and extremely polite. the rooms are neaty. that's stable for a mid-priced hotel.
