Emily: you should have no worries.
Xylitol is toxic at 0.1 mg/kg
Your dog weighs 16 pounds - there are 453.6 grams in a pound and 1000 grams in a kg. Therefore, your dog has a weight of 7.2576 kg
In a piece of orbit gum there is 200 mg of xyltiol in one piece of gum.
200 mg xylitol/7.2576 kg = 0.02755 mg/kg
Which is significantly lower than 0.1! So she should be fine.
Notes: to be toxic, your dog would have to ingest almost 4 pieces of gum at 200 mg xylitol a piece - which means - if you are sure she didn't eat that many, she should be fine. I dont' know how much xylitol is in Stride gum, you can call the company first thing in the morning and ask - as long as the xylitol amount is less than 726 mg per piece (and I would bet that it is!) you won't hit the 0.1 mg/kg weight.

If the emergency vet said to call the vet tomorrow, it doesn't sound like it would be harmful. It appears that you are a very concerned pet parent. Watch your pet for the next 24 hours and see if there is anything unusual in eating, potty issues, vomiting, etc. It should pass. Some dogs will eat anything so please be more careful in the future. I panicked when my dog ate a chocolate kiss, which could be fatal, so I know exactly how you feel. Good luck! Oh yeah, my girl was fine.

I would call your veterinarian and monitor your dog for signs of collapse/weakness/seizures. Certain sugarless gums contain a sweetner that not only causes a sudden drop in blood sugar, but also liver failure in dogs and cats. I wouldn't worry much about it getting stuck if it was just one piece, but the blood sugar drop can happen with just a small amount of gum!!!!! Call your vet!!

A stick of gum should not bother a dog. My son's Sheltie would head off the walking path to pick up discarded gum. Which ever side he was walking on,the gum would be in the opposite jaw., hiding it from me. Chocolate was the dangerous confection.

If it contains Xylitol, then you may want to call a vet.Xylitol can kill a dog by causing kidney and liver damage, but it depends on how much the dog consumes for it's weight.I hope your dog will be OK.

With one piece of gum, leave your poor dog alone.
Nothing to worry at all.
