I know you can watch blu-ray DVD movies using your PS3 - but is it as good as a dedicated blu-ray DVD player? Same picture quality? All the controls - slo-mo, FF, frame advance, chapters, etc, etc. I can buy a blu-ray DVD player or a PS3 - might enjoy some game play, but it's really not important - will I wish I had just got a DVD player?

It actually is decent. No one thinks it is because it is cheap for Blu-ray but then again you have to remember it's Sony.

Yes, it is one of the best BD players on the market, as long as you don't need 5.1 analog audio outputs.
1. It has HDMI 1.3, and was way ahead of the pack with that one.
2. It has an Ethernet port for software upgrades--I think there might be only one standalone player that has this. I could be wrong in that the PS3 is the only BD player to have this feature. This is a VERY important and advantageous feature.
3. It has, by far, the fastest start-up time of any BD player. Some take over a minute. The PS3 takes like 15 seconds.
4. OH! and it's the cheapest BD player.

Actually the PS3 is the best blue ray player on the market.
All the magazines compare the preformance (response & video quality) of stand alone players to the PS3 and few come close to the quality of the PS3.
I suspect the cell processors in the PS3 are why it is so good.

It is an excellent Blu-Ray player. And an excellent DVD player (with latest software upgrade).
The only problem I see is incorporating it into HT system universal remote - it uses Bluetooth, and not the RF. If you use universal remote for your HT, you should get the USB IR adapter for PS3.

It plays blu-ray movies just as well as other players do, plus you get all the other functionality such as games and music and stuff.

Doesn't really matter. Blu-Ray is crap. So is HDDVD actually.
Just wait and buy a dual-player. They are dvd players that play BR and HDDVD, so you never have to choose.
