Growing up my mom always told me never to work past your stated hours (i.e. 9-5) because that's a way that the company takes advantage of you. However, I would like to develop a better work ethic.

I want to learn how to motivate myself to work harder and longer without feeling cheated because the company pays me the same amount (and I should mention that I'm in a field without a lot of salary variance...I don't expect working harder or longer to lead to monetary rewards). Also, I just feel so tired after a long day that it's hard to be disciplined to put in extra hours. How do you motivate yourself when no one is forcing you to do it?

I've been a salary employee for a long time. If you work for a company you believe in and genuinely wish for the company to succeed (ensuring your success) then you will naturally put forth the extra effort. Remind yourself that these little sacrifices will pay off in the long run...they will be noticed. Set some goals...you don't seem to expect monetary rewards but perhaps personal ones. Learning new things to make you more efficient, increasing your understanding of the "big picture", inspiration for new ideas to be more profitable. Make it a learning adventure and keep using a positive mindset to keep motivated. Good luck!

Most companies are no longer loyal to their employees so I don't believe in making "sacrifices". Honestly, that equals missing out on life. The best way to motivate yourself is to do something you love, that way it won't feel like work:) As a bonus you'll end up succeeding tremendously!
