Exactly! It took us 8 years to prop up a democratic government in Japan, and that was without people blowing themselves up everywhere. Did they seriously think it would take a weekend?

On to the question... Because nobody wants those troops out... But the old hippies and ignorant wanna-be peaceniks want out of Iraq, regardless of the consequences and more for their own self satisfaction than for anyone Else's benefit. It comes down to pandering... some people want to hear it.. and some people are power hungry enough to tell them what they want to hear, even when they know the world would be worse off for it, just as long as it gets them elected to office.

If the Democratic party pulls us out now we'll be back in less than a decade, losing thousands of lives per month instead of per year... and we'll hear how it's Bush's fault for starting it, not theirs for not allowing our troops to finish it.....

OCCUPYING force in Germany?? Like someone said, we have bases. we're not setting up road blocks, doing door to door searches, or turning over territories to the German police for control. You're taking a big leap with this comparison of a war that was clearly justified vs a war that was started under the reason of "they have wmd's and are a threat to us", which after there were no wmd's discoved turned into "we removed Sadam from power and liberated Iraq, mission accomplished". If Bush had said from day one the purpose of this war will be to remove Sadam and liberate Iraq, with no mention of a threat to this country, would you still support the initial decision to go to war? Would the country as a whole had supported it? You can't raid someone's house saying you have proof he's a serial killer of 20 people, then come out with the guy and say, sorry we were wrong about that, but he has unpaid parking tickets, mission accomplished!

You know what, the only people who should be complaining about Germany and Japan should be the soldiers. And they're not cause we have no reason to. So why is this an issue with you?

Because Japan and Germany are functioning countries to whom our presence (and in neither place is it an "occupation") is a minor inconvenience at worst, rather than crippled hellholes which are our fault, and where our presence incites constant horrible violence.

Or Korea (50 years), Bosnia/Kosovo (15 years)?

Excellent point. Thanks for pointing it out. Unfortunately, too many people rely only on the media, without a few good doses of history mixed in.

You do realize that we pay those countries to allow our bases to be there, right?

no, it is not an excellent point. There's no one getting killed there. And our presence there is wanted and advantagous to both...
