simply by hearing their sins and asking questions as to their situation to determine if true sorrow was present, which Im sure it was much of the time. Jesus gave them this power which is still in the church with the sucessors, when Jesus breathed on them and said receive ye the holy spirit whos sins ye shall forgive they are forgiven whos sins ye shall hold bound they are held bound. thats the power given by christ himself

I know where you are going with this and let me ask you something. If confession to a priest is so important. Why isn't there one example of it in the Bible? Honestly I don't think Jesus gave the apostles to forgive sins here but instead to be able to declare who is a Christian.

How do you know that Jesus did not make it so the apostles just knew? He often knew about people and their sins before they ever spoke. You assume that Jesus gave them this power and people have to confess to a priest. My hypothesis is just as legitimate though as it is not specifically stated.

Just to add I am not trying to be mean or put you down. Just presenting a different view.

It does not talk about the apostles, it talks about the church. The church, the body of Christ, is the only one that can do that.
