Usually at the beginning of the workout which is best first thing in the morning. This is because that you are more likely not to skip the workout in the morning and not to skip the crunches if you do in the beginning of the workout but it matters not too much for the calorie burning as to when or what time of day, just to keep you from skipping them if you get lazy or tired

it makes no difference at all. it takes very little energy for the various muscles of the mid-section to perform work so the caloric expenditure used to exercise them is very minute.

right after you wake up and right before you go to bed. and incorperate them in your workouts as well.
