Skin is the first defense against outside invaders - bacteria, viruses, fungi...when the skin is damaged, microbes can enter the body much more easily. Until a really effective synthetic skin is developed, people will continue to die from exposure to germs after they've been burned. I imagine it would be a horrible way to die.

The body has a lost a lot of blood; part of what is in the blood are white blood cells that help keep the body free from infection. The immune system is weak and the body has lost a lot of fluids. The body's metabolism is revved up becaused the person needs to eat a lot of calories to help the body heal. The main thing is that the wounds really open up the body to a risk for infection. Since the body is already in a compromised state, an infection will cause the person to lose their life as they are not able to fight it off.
