Shihtzus, Golden Retrievers, Labradors are wonderful with children. I believe boxers are too, but they might be better for older children since they love to jump on people a lot.

Nothing too small (aka yorkies and chihuahuas although cute are a BAD idea.), because their bones are so sensitive.

-PUGs are wonderful with kids, but they can have some breathing problems. http://www.eleanore.net/pug/May05%20003.jpg

-BEAGLEs are also great with kids, aren't really into biting or anything, but they can be stubborn when being trained. They have a good patience level for kids.

- LABRADOR retriever's are by far some of the best dogs for kids. Bred for retrieving, they have a "soft" bite. Basically when they bite or nip they generally don't lock down like a lot of dogs do. Super happy dogs, but have a lot of energy.

- GOLDEN retriever's, same ditty about their biting as with the Labs, also have a lot of energy but still very nice, happy dogs.

Other tips:
- Herding dogs will try to herd your kids in most instances. They may be super smart, but part of herding is nipping, so generally not the best pick, since they will try to dominant your kids and they are still pretty young.
- Some other good dogs with kids are Bernese Mountain Dogs, Great Danes, and Boxers but they go through a clumsy puppy stage and might unintentionally hurt your children. Basset Hounds and Bichon Frise are also good with kids.
- Small dogs live a couple years longer usually.

Check out English Springer Spaniels! They are excellent with kids. We decided when our daughter turned 2 that it was time for a puppy and that's the breed we went with. 2 years later, they are the best of friends. They are very sweet dogs, just playful enough for children, but not too rough. You should definately look into the breed.

It depends on the children you have and what kind of a lifestyle you live. Whatever dog you decide to get make sure it is brought up from a puppy to accept having it's tail pulled and having someone get in it's way of food. If you don't do this whatever dog you get is just a likely to attack your children. I personally have a 4 month old son and i have a red nose pit bull and an american staffy who sleeps under his cot and i wouldn't have it any other way.

I dont know about other dogs but I've had a border collie x lab and now have a golden retriever. the first dog was around when my son was just learning to walk, he was quite a boisterous pup but around my son he calmed down, even walking beside him so my son could grab onto his coat for balance, such an intelligent dog, we all miss him. The golden retriever is a new addition and my children are all grown up now but whenever I take him for walks...well he looks like a big teddybear and he is, loves the cuddles from all ages.

We had a golden retriever when my son was a toddler. That dog was so sweet and gentle, an dI'm pretty sure she knew he was just a baby, and was more patient because of that. She was tolerant of ear pulling, doggie riding, food bowl issues, everything. A lot of those retriever/lab/newfoundland breeds are good like that. I have a yellow lab now and I would trust him with babies too.

Pugs are by far the greatest with children, or so I've seen. Honestly, research the breed...they are kids best friends!

i honestly haven't been around many dogs (i'm a cat person), but my brother-in-law used to have 2 shi-tsus and he and my sister now have a golden retriever and all of them are the sweetest dogs, that i think would be great with children.

Any dog that is well trained. However, never leave a dog, no matter how well trained, alone with your child.

Poodles for the most part have a protective but nurturing quality. They are small and are very smart.
