We're atheists and have taken to calling it the solstice tree... it goes up the day after thanksgiving, and comes down the day after new years...

My mother was always very strict in that the tree would be taken down on the Feast of the Epiphany ie Jan 6
By taken down I mean the 30 year old plastic tree would be put back into its box in the garage :)

I take it down the day after Christmas. I used to do it New Year's Day but we are now out of town at a family members house and I don't want the house to catch fire.

I used to keep a tree until the nagging to take it out became too much to bear. By that time it was usually so dry that any static discharge could have caused it to burst into flames. Well, I live by myself now. So I play it safe and don't bother to get one.

Stop cutting down the trees. The birds need them, they control water runoff, erosion and give you shade from the Sun. A cut down tree brought into the house and decorated with colored balls is ugly compared to the way it looked where it was growing. Bad habit.

We normally keep it up until after New Years or when the branches dry out and the needles start falling all over the carpet.
So whichever one comes first.

Usually the end of Christmas time is when the 3 Wise Men arrive; then you can take your tree/decorations down. (Of course a lot depends on the dryness of your tree - dry trees are very dangerous.)
Hope you can have a wonderful peaceful season.

Well, along about March, when all the needles have fallen off and the tree is a real fire hazard, I figure it is time to take it down.
