The tickets are so expensive - over $100 each for Broadway and off-Broadway shows. Are there any other options?

Time Out's Theater section covers Off-Off Broadway extensively -- timeoutnewyork.com.

When Broadway stagehands AREN'T striking, you can also take advantage of the TKTS booth to get half-priced tickets to shows.

Also, many Broadway houses offer standing-room tickets for $20 when you go in about 30 minutes before the show starts.

TKTS at 46th between Broadway and 8th. You can only buy tickets for that day and of course the selection is limited to "what isn't sold out", but there is usually a good amount of quality shows and tickets are 35-50% off. I have found this to be the best option for "cheap" tickets. I believe it opens at 3 most days. Go to this website:

There are small theaters in the East Village. Theater for the Second City and the La Mama are two. Therea are others. Also Joe Pap's Theatre in the East Village. All of these theaters either produce avant garde plays or the classics.

Yes you can go get the free ticket and be the audience of some top TV shows! Go to the TKTS booth in Times Square on Mondays or Tuesdays. You may find something out of it.

Many shows do do have a holiday schedule that may include a Christmas or New Years eve performance this year (a special Monday performance), however many shows are 'dark' on Mondays. You will need to check each show you are interested in.
