I recently started seeing someone who I think is absolutely amazing in every way. Here's the issue...I'm caucasian and he is Asian (NOTE: THIS IS NOT A PROBLEM FOR ME--IT'S MY FAMILY I'M WORRIED ABOUT). I am 27 years old so nobody can tell me who to date and I am sure that my mother and sisters will love him, BUT my father and grandparents are old-school German and I know that they will make racist remarks. I want to prepare them both before meeting. I don't want my grandparents to say anything that will hurt him or offend him and I also don't want him to be shocked by their ignorance if they do slip-up. Even if they don't say anything to his face, I know that when I talk to my father he is going to have "nicknames" for him. I fight with my father's side of the family a lot due to their closed-mindedness...how should I handle this???

I have a pretty good relationship with my family, and I know if they reacted like that I would not be speaking to my family very much for the duration of the relationship. Old-school or not, treating someone that way is wrong. If they don't like him, think he's a jerk, etc. fine, but to treat him with anything less than respect because of his ethnicity is not right. I know it may not be the way others would handle this, but I simply would not hang around the family members in question.

well you shuld tell your family who are you dating..and that you really like him, and just say all the good things about him before they meet. Or you could just let your bf meet them, and tell your bf that your family will say things that he wouldnt like to hear, and that he shuldnt worry about it too much..because you will make your family like him no matter what they say about him. good luck
