My mother's worsening mental illness is affecting my ability to work (I am a graduate student). She lives with my father and is very far away. To visit them frequently, I have even modified my academic schedule & deadlines to accommodate holidays but I am not sure if this is the right thing to do. My friends are telling me that as an adult, I should be focusing entirely on school. On the other hand, she is becoming less and less of the person I once knew and I feel like I need to spend as much time with her as possible, and that if I concentrate too much on work and school right now, I might regret it later. Am I right? or are my friends right?

I personally think Family is the most important thing in life.
I would give up anything for my family.
Your education is very important....BUT you can all ways continue with education. You only have one mother. She loves you unconditionally, and has since before your birth.
Believe me, she needs you. She needs to know that you love HER unconditionally.
What ever decision you make, make it one you can live comfortably with. Look into your own heart and YOU decide. Don't let friends, or anyone here on yahoo answers influence your decision.

It sounds to me like you have answered your own question. To me family is very important, especially if sickness or death is present. You should make the most of the time you have left with them, because as you said you will live to regret it. You have to follow your heart, and not what others are telling you to do. After all family is forever, friends come and go. There will always be time to accomplish and finish schooling, there may not always be that time to let your family know your there and that you love them. Especially a parent.
I am sorry to hear about your mom. Stay strong, only you will know the right path to follow that you can live with. Best Wishes.

Family is the most important. You can always go to school, yes you may fall behind in your goals and behind the accomplishments of your classmates, but you can always catch up. You only have one chance to be with your Mom at a time when she needs you.
