Technically the municipality of the Jerusalem borders Bethlehem, however the Old City of Jerusalem is around 10 kilometers as another answerer has said. Check out http://www.eyeonisrael.com/map_Israel.html for a look at the distance.
Good Luck!!!

They essentially share a common border.
Bethlehem (which is not in Israel but is part of the Palestinian Authority) had been primarily a Christian city, but in recent years the "friction" with the Muslims there has resulted in many Christians leaving.
Currently, Jews are not permitted to go to Rachel's Tomb in Bethlehem except in bulletproof buses, although it's just a few minutes walk from Gilo in Jerusalem.
Kfar Etzion and other villages in the Jerusalem-Bethlehem corridor fell to Arab forces in May 1948 and those captured were massacred. Sons and daughters of Jews who lived there until 1948 were the first to return after the 1967 war.

Bethlehem is walking distance from Talpiot which is a one of Jerusalem's districts. It is walking distance from Gilo - another Jerusalem's district. Walking distance in this case is less then a mile. Anyone who lives in Gush Etsion passes by Bethlehem on their way to Jerusalem.
